In this episode of Kindred Spirits, John Anthony and I attempt to answer a bundle of listener questions pertaining to ‘professional speaking’. These include:
- How do you make a speech funny?! Is it situational or do you have a go-to angle prepared?
- What’s your view on slides?
- If you could remove one overused phrase from every keynote forever, what would it be?
- What do most speakers get wrong about their audience?
- What’s a common ‘rule of speaking’ you love breaking?
- What’s your pre-stage ritual before a big keynote or event?
- Is there a physical cue or anchor you use to get into the zone? How do you stop your body from freaking out?
John Anthony and I attempt to answer these questions with some aplomb (though as you’ll see from the extended outro—the structure I brought to the episode cramped our usual meandering loquaciousness). We also sample another mizunara cask whisky. “I’m just tasting wood, wood, wood.” Wood that I could! It was very animate.
These episodes are always tricky to ‘summarise’—let alone distil. And artificial intelligence fails dismally, as it should. Ergo, it beckons thy human ears to stay awhile and listen.
